Strawberries and Blueberries Delays Decrease Elderly Brains

Decreased ability of the brain, especially the cognitive abilities always occur in the elderly. But has now found a way to slow the decline is eating strawberries, blueberries and the like.

According to researchers from Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School in the journal Annals of Neurology, elderly people who eat lots of strawberries, blueberries and the like tend to have slower cognitive decline compared to elderly who rarely or never ate them.

In the findings, the researchers suggest that adding strawberries, blueberries and the like are rich in flavonoids in the diet of the elderly can delay the decline in cognitive abilities up to 2.5 years.

Scientists say that inflammation and stress plays a major role in cognitive decline and eat some flavonoids can help reduce its impact.

According to the population census in the United States in 2010, the elderly population in the US alone increased by 15 percent during the first 10 years of the 21st century compared to the overall population increased by only 9.7 percent.

"Because of the conditions, understanding the health issues of the elderly is very important. Our study was intended to examine whether the intake of strawberries, blueberries and the like can slow the rate of cognitive decline," said lead researcher, Dr. Elizabeth Devore as reported from Medicalnewstoday, Tuesday .

Researchers collected data from the Nurses Health Study, which has information on 121 700 women aged 30-55 years who works as a nurse. All the participants also had to complete questionnaires related to health data and life style.

From there, the researchers found that participants who consumed blueberries, strawberries and the like have a level of delay cognitive decline were higher than other participants. It also happened to participants who eat more anthocyanidins and total flavonoids.

Elderly women who consume higher blueberries and strawberry has the possibility of cognitive decline on average 2.5 years older slower than the low intake of blueberries and strawberry.

But the researchers also predict there are other factors related decline in cognitive abilities of elderly in addition to the intake of strawberries, blueberries and the like. For example, participants who ate more blueberries and strawberries also exercise more.
