Cried until satisfied, Grieving is not Mental Disorders

Protracted cry over the death of a loved one might be considered excessive if it lasts for months. But some psychologists say, this behavior can not simply be classified as a psychiatric disorder.

"Mourning is not a disease, it is thought more useful as part of a human and a normal response for the death of loved ones," wrote the editorial experts in the latest edition of The Lancet, as quoted by the Dailymail

This statement was made regarding the plan to other experts who are members of the American Psychiatric Association to tighten the criteria of mourning could be termed as a psychiatric disorder.
If previously the limit was still in a matter of months, the plan will be shortened to two weeks only.

The new criteria are listed in the proposed diagnosis of mental disorder latest book, known as the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders fifth edition (DSM-5). Book or the latest guidelines is scheduled to be used in 2013.

In the guidelines DSM-5, the mourning period is still considered normal up to 2 weeks after the death. In previous guidelines that DSM-4, the time limit of normal mourning still 2 months and even in the DSM-3 reaches one-year time limit.

On the one hand, the restriction time of mourning increasingly stringent useful to psychiatrists in the diagnosis of a mental disorder that leads to severe depression. According to the data, some of the protracted mourning can develop into severe depression and need treatment.

But on the other hand, the restrictions are too strict deemed not respect human values. For most people, mourning is an expression of loss which is the most basic instincts when left to their dear ones.
