As quoted Hopkinsmedicine, kidney transplantation is a surgical procedure to replace a diseased kidney with a healthy kidney from a donor. The kidney may come from organs of a deceased person, either from the family or anyone else
who fits one of his kidneys.
Usually a person can survive with just one kidney transplant. In rare cases, some are getting two healthy kidneys.
Experts say, some kidney conditions that may require transplantation such as:
- Recurrent urinary tract infections
- Renal failure caused by diabetes or high blood pressure
- Polycystic kidney disease or other congenital abnormalities
- Glomerulonephritis, which is an inflammation of the filtering units of the kidney
- Hemolytic uremic syndrome, a rare disorder that causes kidney failure
- Lupus and other diseases of the immune system
- Other conditions, such as congenital defects in the kidney that requires a kidney transplant
