As you age, the elderly will decrease visual acuity. Fortunately, researchers found vitamin D can overcome this disorder in the elderly. In addition, vitamin D is also useful to improve fitness and Alzheimer dispel.
British researchers found vitamin D supplementation has the potential to be a simple and effective way to overcome because of the aging eye diseases such as macular degeneration.
Macular degeneration is a condition in which the macula (center of the retina and into the most important part of the retina) decline resulting in decreased visual acuity and can cause loss of vision.
The study used mice which show the effect of vitamin D have been seen in just six weeks. Scientists believe many people in developed countries are deficient in vitamin D were allegedly important in maintaining the supply of blood flow to the retina.
Professor Jeffrey Glen from the Institute of Ophthalmology at University College London, who led the research explained the small blood vessels that supply blood to the retina become blocked by small molecules from time to time, causing inflammation.
"In
humans, this could lead to a decrease in the number of light-receiving cells in the eye by up to 30 percent when aged 70 years and sparked decreased vision," said Prof. Jeffrey, as reported by The Telegraph
However, when the mice were given a one-year-old vitamin D supplements and injected with safflower oil containing 0.9 micrograms of vitamin D every three days, the accumulation of toxic molecules called beta amyloid is reduced. These mice also had increased visual abilities.
The researchers found this idea after checking other findings that show that vitamin D can reduce the accumulation of amyloid plaques in the brain. Stacking is known to be associated with the development of Alzheimer's disease.
Rats fed the supplement also experienced a reduction of amyloid in the blood vessels, such as aorta. This suggests that vitamin D may also be useful to help prevent various health problems due to age, from decreased vision to heart disease.
"Although vitamin D contained in some foods such as fish and egg yolks, 90 percent of vitamin D made in the skin with the help of sunlight. Many people do not get enough sunlight to produce adequate vitamin D," says Prof. Jefferey.
But Prof. Jeffrey cautioned that researchers need to run clinical trials in humans before saying for sure that the elderly should start taking supplements of vitamin D.
"It is important to remind people that this is only an experiment. A lot of people think to take vitamin supplements without having to consult with a doctor. Taking high-dose supplements can cause health problems," said Clara Eaglen of RNIB.
