Prostate Cancer Risk Can Be Tested Through Urine

Prostate cancer is a type of cancer is the most feared man. But now the risk of a man developing prostate cancer can be known through a urine test.

The new study suggests that urine tests can be performed to find out the genetic changes that occur in some types of prostate cancer. The results of these tests can be used to determine whether a man's risk of low, medium or high against prostate cancer.

During this time the use of prostate-specific antigen test (PSA) alone to determine the presence or absence of prostate cancer. But this has the disadvantage that the test can still show high results even though no cancer.

Dr. Scott
Tomlins, a pathologist at the University of Michigan Medical School said the urine test will be given if the PSA test shows high levels. This is to assist physicians in making a decision whether to perform a biopsy or not.

Use of the test is based on a 2005 study that succeeded in identifying the genetic changes in 50 percent of prostate cancer patients identified through PSA tests. Changes occur in two genes called TMPRSS2 and ERG causes cells to produce specific proteins excessively.

While this new study shows that the genetic material involved in the manufacture of these proteins can be detected in urine. The results of this study have been published in the journal Science Translational Medicine.

By combining the urine test and the PSA test, the researchers can better determine whether a man has prostate cancer risk or not rather than just the PSA test alone, as quoted by LiveScience.

Until now, the exact cause of prostate cancer is unknown. But there are several risk factors that can increase the likelihood of prostate cancer such as age over 50 years, there is a family history of cancer, a diet high in fat and low in fiber as well as obese or overweight.
