Beware, Chicken Pox Could Leaving Other Diseases

Herpes zoster, also known as shingles disease, is associated with increased rates of acute cardiovascular diseases such as ischemic stroke and myocardial infarction (myocardial infarction / MI) or heart attack. This relationship is the result of a study published in PLoS Medicine.

Herpes zoster is a common virus, which affects millions of people in the United States each year. The virus is also the second leading cause of chicken pox and shingles.

After recovering from chickenpox, the virus remains in the body actually though no longer active. Quoted from the site medicalnewstoday.com virus active again after many years 'sleep' even dangerous.

This can cause shingles prolonged, severe,
even disabling pain, a condition called post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN).

Shingles can appear at any age, especially in people over the age of 60 years. People who had chickenpox before the age of 1 year, or individuals with weakened immune systems are also susceptible to this disease.

Someone who has direct contact with patients and earlier shingles rash has not been in contact with chickenpox or have not been given the vaccine could be susceptible to smallpox, but not with shingles itself.

However, the characteristics of smallpox commonly known even make us unaware, at the time that we could experience shingles. It remains unclear why the virus suddenly becomes active again.

The researchers then calculated a person's chance of having a stroke or MI within 12 months after the diagnosis of herpes zoster. They compared the time when the patient does not have the virus, known as the base period. The patient's age was also not spared from such research.

Among those diagnosed with shingles in the past year, one person had a 2.4 times higher chance of experiencing an ischemic stroke and 1.7 times higher chance of getting MI during the first week after herpes zoster, compared to the baseline period patients. The risk declined gradually during the 6 months after the diagnosis of herpes zoster.
