Most Eat Spinach Can Make Kidney Stones


Spinach is usually synonymous with 'Popeye the Sailor' that can strengthen muscles. But eating too much spinach was found to contribute to develop kidney stones because it contains high levels of calcium oxalate.

Kidney stones or in medical terms is known as nephrolithiasis occur due to hard as a rock mass that forms in the urinary tract and can cause blockage or infection as well. The stones can form in the kidney and bladder.

Urine contains various chemicals that help keep all components in the urine in the form of a solution to prevent the formation of crystals. Typically, the soluble waste products in the urine and travels to the kidneys where waste products are eliminated from the body.

Kidney stones are formed when chemicals in the urine is not balanced with other urinary components, such as calcium and oxalate. It can be caused due to excessive intake of oxalate-rich foods, such as spinach.

If you are prone to develop kidney stones because calcium oxalate, low-oxalate diet with food may help. On this diet, you are not allowed to eat spinach, which is categorized as a high-oxalate foods because they contain at least 10 mg per serving oxalate, as reported by Livestrong

Also high oxalate content in foods such as nuts, peanut butter, soy products, pretzels, whole grain bread, berries, grapes, carrots, celery, eggplant, olives, potatoes, sweet potatoes (sweet potato) and chocolate.

Oxalate foods containing medium, which contains 2 to 10 mg of oxalic example, yogurt, apples, peaches, pears, pineapple, oatmeal, broccoli, lettuce, corn, tomatoes and onions.

While foods containing oxalic low with 2 mg of oxalate per serving include cheese, milk, bananas, oranges, avocados, cherries, white pasta, white rice, bacon, beef, ham, chicken, scallops, cauliflower, cucumbers and mushrooms.

In addition to reducing foods that contain lots of oxalate, those with kidney stones talent should also drink plenty of water. University of Pittsburgh Medical Center recommends that people who are prone to calcium oxalate kidney stones to drink 8 to 13 glasses of water per day.
