Alzheimer's can be a terrible disease because it can snatch a person's life. Now the study gives new hope to find a cure to stop the progression of Alzheimer's.
The World Health Organization (WHO) said Alzheimer's is the fourth leading cause of death in high-income countries for improving the aging population worldwide.
Now scientists from the Salk Institute for Biological Studies provides high hopes for a new drug can improve memory and prevent brain damage in rats. So it becomes a promising candidate as the first drug to be able to stop the progression of Alzheimer's in humans.
Salk team developed a method using living neurons grown in laboratory containers to test the effectiveness of new synthetic compounds in protecting brain cells against the pathologies associated with brain aging.
Researchers begin using lead compounds that were originally developed for the treatment of stroke and brain injury combined with the test results of the chemical compound.
But the team found that these compounds can alter the chemical structure to make Alzheimer's drugs are much stronger, otherwise known as J147. The results of this study were published in the journal PLoS ONE.
"Alzheimer's is a complex disease, but developments in the pharmaceutical world often focused on the amyloid pathway that fails when clinical trials," said Marguerite Prior, who led the study along with Qi Chen, as quoted from Gizmag.com
Prior stated otherwise by testing these compounds in living cell cultures, it can determine what the cells to various problems related to age and choose how to prevent it.
"J147 enhances memory and also protect the brain from the loss of synaptic connections. Currently there are no drugs on the market for Alzheimer's have both of these qualities," he said.
The team revealed J147 will be tested for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease in humans in the near future. Due to extensive ability to protect nerve cells, it is likely that these drugs are also effective for treating other neurological disorders such as Parkinson's,
