Two-drug combination helps Children With Diabetes Type 2

Type 2 diabetes actually can strike anyone, no matter what age. But lately this disease increasingly affects children and adolescents while treatment therapy is still not optimal.
Therefore, a new study finds that children with type 2 diabetes can control their blood sugar levels with a combination of two drugs, namely metformin and Avandia.
The problem, experts recently found a link between Avandia (rosiglitazone) with an increased risk of heart attack and stroke so for the time Avandia is not considered the best drug choice for younger patients.
"Many children with type 2 diabetes whose disease progressed rapidly that immediately require insulin therapy while a new oral therapeutic approach is not adequate," said lead researcher Dr. Philip Zeitler, professor of medicine at the University of Colorado, Denver as reported from MSN,
Zeitler noted that Avandia has been chosen as a companion drug for patients with type 2 diabetes since 2002, long before heart problems associated with drug use are known.
"For the moment we do not recommend treatment with rosiglitazone," he said. Even so, for a while yet problems arise with the use of rosiglitazone emerging from participants to date.
In a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, involved 700 children aged 10-17 were obese and had type 2 diabetes who were randomized to three treatment options: metformin alone, metformin plus Avandia or metformin along with changes in diet and exercise intensively ,
After 46 months, the researchers found that participants who drank only metformin alone, 51.7 percent of them are still unable to control their blood sugar levels. But for participants who received metformin and make lifestyle changes, there are still 46.6 percent of patients who are unable to control their blood sugar. While the participants who took metformin and Avandia, just 38.6 percent of patients were admitted in sugar can not be controlled.
"Metformin may not be as effective as we assume and additional treatment approaches are still urgently needed to deal with the adolescent population with diabetes is progressive," said Zeitler.
Within the framework of lifestyle changes, Zeitler was not sure why it can not work well. This may be related to the reluctance of children to adopt new eating and exercise habits, he said.
Dr. Joel Zonszein, director of the clinical diabetes center at Montefiore Medical Center in New York City said, "Type 2 diabetes in children and adolescents is a catastrophe because we do not have good treatment."
Whereas type 2 diabetes in children are very aggressive and can lead to heart problems and liver at a very young age, he said.
"It is not surprising that this combination is better than monotherapy," said Zonszein. "We want aggressive in treating type 2 diabetes in children, but we have to balance the risks and benefits of both of these drugs. But so far we do not have good data and treatment for children."
This latest study shows that once children suffering from this disease, it is very difficult to prevent the decline despite intensive lifestyle changes or medications have been conducted, he said.
