Lack of sleep can adversely impact the hearing. According to one study, symptoms of ringing in the ears or tinnitus to get worse as a result of insomnia. Both of these disorders are both caused due to psychological problems.

Research conducted by scientists from the Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit showed a significant association between insomnia and the severity of tinnitus symptoms are felt. Insomnia patients claim to feel disorder caused tinnitus disease is greater.

"Tinnitus is influenced by cognitive processes, emotional, and psycho-physiological disorders that may increase the patient's experience. Sleep disorders in patients can decrease tolerance to tinnitus," said the researcher, Kathleen L. Yaremchuk, MD, Chair, Department of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery at Henry Ford Hospital as reported by Science Daily.

The cause of tinnitus itself is still not known with certainty. There are several conditions that proved to trigger or worsen tinnitus as hearing a loud noise, earwax accumulates, ear or sinus infections, head and neck injuries, disorders hipotiroidusme or hyperthyroidism, Lyme disease, fibromyalgia, and thoracic outlet syndrome.

Previous research has shown a strong relationship between tinnitus and psychological disorders. In this study, Dr. Yaremchuk, Dr. George Miguel and his research team conducted a study of 117 patients who received treatment from 2009 to 2011 at Henry Ford Hospital.

Information obtained from the patient by telephone and written interviews using the Tinnitus Reaction Questionnaire (TRQ) to determine the impact of tinnitus disturbance towards life in general. The participants were also asked to fill Insomnia Severity Index or the Insomnia Severity Index (ISI) to determine the severity of insomnia.

The severity of the TRQ proved to be a good predictor of sleep disorders. The greater the severity of insomnia, the patient complained of tinnitus symptoms are also more severe.

"Treating patients with tinnitus is a challenge. Chronic tinnitus patients experiencing clinical symptoms such as anxiety, depression and emotional disturbances. One of the most frequent complaint is difficulty sleeping tinnitus patients," said Dr. Yaremchuk.

In the Combined Otolaryngological Spring Meetings in San Diego, this study offers further evidence that the treatment of insomnia patients who experience tinnitus can reduce the severity of tinnitus symptoms.
