large-scale study to quantify the risk of dementia interracial showed interesting results. African-Americans ranked highest risk of dementia in 25 years.
The study was conducted by Dr Rachel Whitmer and colleagues from Kaiser Permanente and the University of California. There are racial and ethnic studied the African-American, Asian-American, American whites, Hispanics, Pacific islands tribes, Indian tribes, and local tribal Alaska.
By looking at insurance data 274,000 participants over 13 years, Dr. Whitmer found that African-Americans have the highest risk of developing dementia. On the other hand, Asian-Americans had the lowest risk than other races.
"The fact that Asian-Americans have the lowest risk should be a sign for us. What they are doing so risks become smaller. On the other hand, we must learn why black people can have the highest risk," said Dr. Whitmer, quoted by Reuters,
The results of the study refer people with dementia highest prevalence is in African-Americans with 27 cases per 1000 population per year. While the lowest prevalence was Asian American with 15 cases per 1000 population per year.
Overall of 274,000 participants, almost 60,000 who suffer from dementia and other 89,000 did not. During 14 years of research conducted, 80,000 participants died and 46,000 out of the insurance program and not recorded.
Researchers also revealed heightened risk of developing dementia within 25 years from now. Again, African-American race is ranked top with 38 percent.
Jennifer Manly of the Taub Institute for Research on Alzheimer's Disease and the Aging Brain, Columbia University, said the research is one of the largest studies ever conducted. Therefore, it is important for people to know their risk of developing dementia.
"Regular exercise, including sports brain is very useful for preventing dementia. If a race you belong to a high risk, it is advisable to take precautions since a young age," he said.
