Sleep Deprivation Can Cause Hypertension

Everyone needs adequate sleep, because if less would have implications for health. The study found people who sleep less may have high blood pressure.

People who lack sleep usually often make mistakes and feel irritated in the morning. It turned out that the consequences are not only limited to that. Over time, people who often lack of sleep can contribute to high blood pressure.

When sleeping person will experience a phase of brain waves known as slow-wave sleep. Sleep phase is considered restorative and has proved important for memory and performance of a person's mental.

The study, involving 784 participants found those who spent time slow-wave sleep less than 4 percent had a 83 percent higher chance of developing high blood pressure (hypertension).

"These results demonstrate the important aspect of quality sleep with the risk of high blood pressure, and older people are less likely to get a stage of slow-wave sleep as we age," said Eve Van Cauter, director of the Sleep, Metabolism and Health Center at the University of Chicago, as quoted from Healthland.Time.

Previously been known that sleep problems associated with high blood pressure. Sleep apnea and chronic disorders make someone woke up and had to fight for breath a couple of times in the evening, the condition is strongly associated with increased blood pressure.

Dr. Susan Redline were involved in the study and professor at Harvard Medical School says there are several things you can do to help people sleep longer and deeper as go and wake up at the same time, avoiding alcohol and tobacco before sleep and get cleaned up (sleep hygiene).

"But the most important thing to avoid lack of sleep is the absence of disturbances during sleep such as sleep apnea, snoring or periodic leg movements," said Dr. Redline.

While high blood pressure is a condition that can cause various complications if not handled properly, especially cardiovascular diseases such as heart disease and stroke.
