Eating too much Make Memory Weaken

Overeating can double the risk of developing memory problems. Adults who eat between 2100-6000 calories per day are twice as likely to develop memory problems are weakened.

The new results are scheduled to be presented at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Neurology in New Orleans.

The more calories consumed by adults, the risk of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is higher. MCI is the medical term for mild memory loss. People with MCI are at greater risk for developing dementia, but does not occur in all cases of MCI.

Although it is not serious enough to interfere with daily life. However, people with MCI may have problems to recall events or new information, as well as having problems with other brain functions.

The study has involved more than 1,200 people aged between 70-89 years, including 163 people who have signs of MCI. Participants described the diet that will be carried out during the year before the study filled out questionnaires.

One-third of study participants ate between 600-1526 calories per day, a third will eat between 1526-2143 calories, while the rest eat between 2143-6000 calories per day. The study
also took other factors such as age, gender, education level, history of stroke, and depression.

Study participants who took the highest number of calories per day have twice the risk of having MCI.

"The results are compatible with what is already known about risk factors for people with middle age for Alzheimer's disease. Obesity increases the risk of Alzheimer's, and caloric restriction can lower the risk for Alzheimer's," says Sam Gandy, MD, PhD, director of the Mount Sinai Alzheimer's Disease Research Center in New York as reported by WebMD.

"Further studies and more have shown that everything that is good for the heart is good for the brain. When people eat too much, there will be complications, including the risk of diabetes, stroke, and memory problems," said David Loewenstein, PhD., A professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.

Try to control the number of calories consumed, and exercise regularly. If you cut the number of calories and replacing them with nutritious food, the risk of brain disease and heart disease can be significantly reduced.

"But the results of these studies can not prove whether eating too much causes memory problems. It could be memory problems cause a person to eat too much," said Marc L. Gordon, MD, chief of neurology at Zucker Hillside Hospital in Glen Oaks, New York ,

"People aged 70 years to over 80 years old should not consume more than 2,100 calories per day. Because if you eat more calories than the amount can be at risk of disease cognitive and obesity," said Christine Tangney, PhD, a professor of clinical nutrition at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago.
