Chocolate has been shown to induce a feeling of relaxed and happy, heart health, it can even prevent cancer. But it turns brown benefits do not stop there. Chocolate can also help the growth of the fetus if taken daily by pregnant women.
Scientists in Canada have been conducting research on the benefits of chocolate for the baby in the womb. They found that if pregnant women eat chocolate every day, it will have a positive effect on the placenta, fetal growth and development by increasing blood flow.
As reported by ABC News, February 3, 2016, a study to be presented to the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine investigated whether high-flavanol chocolate can reduce pre-eclampsia, the end of the term disorder that can lead to many serious health problems for both mother and fetus.
Previous chocolate has been shown to increase the risk of pre-eclampsia but the results have been contradictory, so this study set out to examine the role of flavanols. Flavanols is a compound found in dark chocolate or dark chocolate, and has been associated with numerous health benefits, including reducing blood pressure and improve mental function.
The study, led by Emmanuel Bujold it involved 129 women between the ages of 11 and 14 weeks gestation. They were randomly separated into two groups, both were given 30 grams of chocolate per day for 12 weeks with different flavanol levels. The first group get high flavanol chocolate, while others get the low flavanol chocolate.
Pre-eclampsia, gestational hypertension, placental weight and birth weight were measured, while blood flow measurements taken at baseline and after 12 weeks. There is no significant difference between the two groups was found in any size, but both groups showed an increase in blood flow that is much larger than that expected in the general population.
"This study indicates that chocolate may have a positive effect on placental and fetal development. However this is not solely and directly caused by the flavanol content "said Emmanuel.
