These scientists obtained through data collected by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, which is observed on reanalyze the brightness and distance of stars at the edge of the galaxy. Scientists also suspect that dwarf galaxies may have fallen through the disk of the Milky Way, like a pebble dropped into a pond. In fact, the intruder galaxy may have formed spiral wave then triggers star formation in gas along the wave causing the spiral arms in the galaxy.
"Entering the ring to the map of the Milky Way galaxy expands the range of 100,000 light years to 150,000 light-years away," added Yan Xu, China National Observatory astronomer and former visiting scientist at Rensselaer.
Astronomers also hope to see a higher resolution, such as three-dimensional view of the Monoceros Ring, and another ring from Europe Gaia telescope. Once can see the ripples in the gas in the galaxy related as observed at the stars.
"In gas, we have seen some disruption, this vertical oscillation, in the outer part of the galaxy," added astronomer Leo Blitz of the University of California, Berkeley in the site.
