A man from Canada was seized by US authorities after he was found trying to smuggle thousands of turtles from the US to China. He was then sentenced to five years in prison for smuggling the animals in relatively high amounts.
As reported by the Vice , the man from Ontario, Canada, identified as Xu Kai is listed've done smuggling turtles from Canada or the US to China many times. Xu claimed to work alone despite sometimes pay others to smooth action.
Matthew said his client was not a smuggler big fish. Seen from ordinary methods to hide the turtle in his pants."I'm very sorry, but grateful for the efforts of smuggling immediate intervention by the authorities at the border point. John Corbett O'Meara, US judge who has authority over the case initially claimed he was sympathetic to the perpetrators who realized his mistake. Moreover, Xu demonstrate good behavior during his arrest 19 months.
However, the judge O'Meara assess Xu action could no longer be tolerated. Therefore, the value of the smuggled turtles when totaled could reap a profit of US $ 1 million. He finally insisted to be officially sentenced to Xu on Tuesday, April 12th yesterday, for 5 years in prison Woodward, Oklahoma.
"This case is unique. This is not the usual case we face every day," said O'Meara.
The Guardian reported a student from Windsor, Ontario, Canada, was previously detained by US authorities for having launched an effort to smuggle more than 1,600 turtles with diverse species of the US exit. The 27-year-old boy named Kai Xu aksinyna was first launched in April 2014, and was arrested in September of the same year.
Arrests have been made after local authorities US border and Canada found 41 turtlessurviving attached with adhesive to the feet of Xu. He was finally arrested for 19 months and imposed a fine of US $ 2,700 before the judge O'Meara formally decided to imprison him for 5 years.
