Until now, it is still unclear what happened to the sardine and where they came from. Also unclear whether other types of fish are also affected.
What is clear, sardine population is often fluctuate for several reasons. One of them is weak (hypoxia). This is a result of increased primary production in a body of water that leads to decreased levels of oxygen and suffocating marine organisms. Turns out this is not the first time Chile experienced fish kills related to hypoxia.
In the last month, the country's salmon industry disrupted since the outbreak of harmful algal blooms (harmful algal bloom,HAB) cause mass death. The process of eutrophication-fertilization of algae either natural or synthetic-increasing HAB that lead to hypoxia.
Death salmon is lowered to 15% of total production of salmon Chile, on a par with economic losses of US $ 800 million
Sardines are not included in the list of endangered species, but the food network, a reduction in the numbers affect animals in tropical higher levels, such as sea lions.
In March, in the US, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) reported that the decrease in the supply of sardines and anchovies causes hunger in babies sea lions. Female sea lions are not getting adequate nutrition because of reduced main meals. Female animals that malnutrition was not able to guarantee the nutrition of their children.
The struggle to keep the fish supply Chile also echoed in the US. Two of the state is facing a huge obstacle to rebuild their fisheries.Obstacles that include excessive fishing, water pollution  , and climate change .
Meanwhile, residents Queulue feel disappointed with the authorities for the cleanup slow motion, according to Reuters. There was also concern about the health, because the fish is rotting even meet shoreline. Euronews reported similar incidents in the neighboring area, Los Rios, in the last month. However, the report was yet to be determined.
