New Haven - After sorting more than 100 species of spider venom, researchers at Yale University managed to characterize a protein from tarantula venom green velvet Peru that can suppress pain sender neuron activity.

Researchers selected poisons of some species of tarantula to get one that blocking TRPA1-an ion channel on the surface of sensory neurons that are involved in inflammatory pain and neuropathic pain.
In the process, dubbed toxineering this, the team created a small collection of mutated version to find a tarantula venom toxins that inhibit TRPA1, but did not affect activity in other channels on the surface of neurons.
"The beauty of this system is that we can also sort out the toxins engineered that does not exist in nature, and characterize more power and more specific molecular variants that are less toxic effects on nerve functions are essential."
The laboratory also intensified the efforts to test tens of thousands of new toxins that have similar biological activity in sensory neurons against illness.
