Sleeping with the Light On Increase Risk of Diabetes

Turn off the lights during the night not only save on electricity bills, but also good for health. Recent research shows that sleeping in a bright room conditions can increase the risk of type 2 diabetes.

The study was conducted by Joshua Gooley, health experts from Harvard Medical School in Boston. In experiments conducted five consecutive days, the Gooley involving 116 participants aged between 18-30 years.

The participants were divided into two groups, one of which is conditioned to be in a brightly lit room for 8 hours before bedtime. The
other group was placed in a room in a lighter with the same duration of 8 hours.

The results of examination of blood samples were taken every 30 minutes showed the hormone melatonin production dropped by 50 percent in participants who were in a bright room. This hormone regulates the biological clock associated with the cycle of sleeping and waking.

Besides trigger drowsiness, melatonin is also associated with some type of serious illness. Melatonin receptors are located on neural mentioned could increase the risk of cancer and type 2 diabetes if its activity is reduced.

"These results provide great impact for workers who are exposed to light throughout the night last night napping when the sun is shining bright," said Gooley as quoted by AP,

However, Gooley can not explain with certainty the relationship between melatonin receptor activity with an increased risk of cancer and diabetes. The mechanism that causes the two are closely related will be revealed in the next Gooley research.
