Madison, Wisconsin - When modern man is so proud of his intelligence, the findings of experts show the volume of the human brain than 20,000 years ago are even greater. No half-hearted, the difference is almost as big as a tennis ball.
"In the last 20,000 years, the average volume of the human brain shrinks from 1,500 cm3 to about 1,350 cm3. Shrinkage occurs in both men and women, regardless of any ethnic," said Kathleen McAuliffe, an anthropologist from the University of Wisconsin as quoted Dailymail
Various speculations were developed by the experts to explain the findings were quite astounding. One of them is related to the ancient civilization that were included in the old stone age period (Upper Paleolithic).
During this period, the activity of early humans made the transition quite dramatically from that originally lived in caves become more outdoors. Allegedly the air is cooler than when inside the cave trigger a physiological adaptation to the size of a human skull.
Another theory says the change is related to changes in eating patterns. From originally a horse or deer meat, stone age humans began to cultivate food to be easier to chew. Rarely chewing causes the jaw does not grow and shrink the overall size of the skull.
Speculation somewhat different developed the University of Missouri, which relate to population density. When the human population and increased complexity of relations with the community, people are not expected to be too smart so that the volume of the brain tends to shrink.
But the latter theory is not too received support from other scholars, because the volume of the brain does not always directly proportional to the level of intelligence. In fact the ability and creativity of human beings, especially for the use of language in communication is increasing from time to time.
"The shrinking of brain volume would indicate that modern man more intelligent. Although the volume is smaller, the human brain can work more efficiently so it does not waste energy," said Dr John Hawks, an anthropologist from the University of Wisconsin more.
