The use of colored lenses on the glasses is suppose to reduce pain in migraine sufferers. Colored lenses can normalize the activity of the brain and reduces migraine.
"Patients with migraine generally feel the pain of visual stimuli that can create discomfort and disturbing illusion." said Jie Huang, PhD, a professor of radiology at Michigan State University, as quoted from coolhealthtips.
Based on previous studies, Huang can be concluded that the cause of vulnerability to such visual stimuli due to excess visual cortex in the brain.
Researchers enrolled 11 people with migraines and 11 people without migraine problems as research objects. Then the researchers make sunglasses with gray lenses and
other colors for comparison.
Each patient wore glasses are then placed in a functional MRI machine. The patient will be exposed to a pattern that may increase distortion and discomfort while in the MRI machine.

"The use of colored lenses can reduce visual discomfort level of 40% compared with colorless lenses. Reduced discomfort that up to 70%. The use of glasses with tinted lenses can reduce visual stress as compared with the use of regular glasses," said Huang.
Visual stress can be caused by activities such as reading, watching TV or working long hours at the computer.
Arnold Wilkins, assistant researcher Huang, continue research to find the best color for visual comfort.
"The use of colored lenses is a new idea to reduce migraines and visual discomfort. Something in the brain is changed by using the lens," said Kathleen Digre, MD, a professor of Neurology and Ophthalmology at the Moran Eye Center at the University of Utah.
Kathleen and her colleagues offer a lens filter, known as the FL-41 is useful in patients with migraine.
This research has been proven to alleviate pain in migraine sufferers, but further research is still needed.
