Drinking Coffee Can Aggravating Dysmenorrhea


Cramping and pain are common in menstruating women alias menstruation. Pain during menstruation could be more severe if women also drink coffee.

Menstrual cramps are contractions of the uterus before and during the period. The pain of menstrual cramps are the most common cause skipping work or school in young women and adolescents, according to Medline Plus.

Uterine contractions to help release the lining of the uterus every month, so that the menstrual cycle can be started after the completion bleeding. According to the Mayo Clinic, a hormone called prostaglandin triggers contractions and the resulting inconvenience. Menstrual cramps
can be mild or severe.

But if you consume beverages containing caffeine such as coffee, tea, certain soft drinks and chocolate, then these substances can worsen menstrual cramps.

Caffeine constricts blood vessels and increases the level of tension, which makes the pain worse, such as the Women's Health Information reported 

Warm drinks can help relieve cramps, but select drinks without caffeine. Calcium, vitamin B6 and magnesium supplements may also help relieve cramps during the premenstrual period.

Menstrual cramps usually have natural causes, but sometimes a symptom of a more serious medical problem. Excessive pain called dysmenorrhea and possible causes such as ovarian cysts, fibroids, endometriosis, sexually transmitted diseases and pelvic inflammatory disease, according to Medline Plus.

See your doctor if you are using is still quite severe menstrual cramps and interfere with daily activities even if you're using painkillers and reducing certain ingredients in abstinence as caffeine.
