Carrots long been considered a super food for the eyes. Research reveals there the other great food, the grape that is claimed to prevent blindness.
According to research at the University of Miami, a grapefruit can inhibit the oxidative stress damage the eyes. Oxidative stress triggers the release of free radicals that alter DNA structure (Deoxyribo Nucleic Acid).
In the eye, there is a layer of the retina that have light-sensitive cells called photoreceptors. Damage to these parts can lead to blindness.
"Adding grapes in the diet actually maintaining the health of the retina in conditions of oxidative stress," said Prof Abigail Hackam who conducted the study, quoted by the Dailymail,
A study published in the journal Nutrition using mice as test animals. The mice were given a dose of wine with a powder which is equivalent to 3 servings of fruit in humans. For comparison, another group of mice not given wine.
Observations show, photo receptors in mice that were not given a wine reduced by 40 percent compared to rats receiving grape powder. Mice that were fed grapes also have photoreceptor activity that is significantly better.
Various previous studies associating wine with a reduced risk of heart disease, cancer, and Alzheimer's disease. Another study at Washington State University mentions that grapefruit can help in weight loss.
