Accidental Scientists Discover Drug That Can Eliminate Breast Cancer

Professor Judith Bliss of the Institute of Cancer Research in London said they found a group of drugs that are capable of reacting with breast cancer. In his report at the European Breast Cancer Conference, he said this meant the possibility in the future there are female patients who did not require chemotherapy.

Researchers describe the effects of these drugs as 'surprising finding' because that is a study undertaken not to seek a cure for cancer. The study on 257 female patients originally run to investigate the effects of some drugs that could change since the first tumor was diagnosed to be operated on.

But when the doctor wanted to do surgery until phase, some patients found no longer signs of cancer.

"We were very surprised by these findings because this is a short-term experiment. It is clear in some patients the drug has a perfect response. Really exciting, really fast," said Prof. Bliss was quoted as saying on the BBC

Drugs are referred to by Prof. Bliss is lapatinib and trastuzumab, or also known as Herceptin. The drug works by targeting the HER2 protein which in some breast cancers used as food.

In the study all participants were found to have breast cancer tumor with a diameter of 1-3 centimeters. In less than two weeks of administration of drugs, in 11 percent of cancer cases were really lost and 17 percent more cases of cancer dramatically decreases to below 5 millimeters.

Prof Bliss said the future still need more study to examine exactly this phenomenon in a wider group. Moreover, because of HER2 breast cancer has a high possibility of return.

"We want to make sure that we do not take a step back and create a risk for recurrence even be higher," concludes Prof. Bliss.
