Similar worms Unique Christmas Trees


Scientifically, this worm is called spirobranchus giganteus. However, they are more commonly known by its nickname - Christmas tree worms. So named because its shape is very similar to spruce used to build a Christmas tree.

Reported Amusing Planet, worms spirobranchus giganteus lived on the sea floor and has a tiered feathers forming a spiral on his body shaped like a pipe. Feathers consisting of thin tendrils of hair resembling the so-called radioles, emerged from the nerve center of the worm, and helps the animal to catch food.
As for their diet consists of microscopic plants or phytoplankton floating in the water. The feathers also serves as a breathing apparatus.
The size of the worm is no more than 4 cm, but they are easily attracted attention thanks to the variety of colors, including orange, yellow, blue, and white.

Christmas tree worms did not move much. Once they've found a place on the reefs, they dig a hole and stay there until the end of life. The worm only occasionally rise to the surface to catch plankton passing with feathers.
They are very sensitive to disturbance and will quickly get back to the hole if it detects a touch or a passing shadow.
According to data of the World Register of Marine Species (Worms), the Christmas tree is a species of worm that spreads population, so no efforts to conserve marine animals. The animal habitat is the tropical seas around the world, found from the Caribbean to the Indian Ocean.
