Understanding Communication Dog equivalent to 6.5 months of age baby

Dogs are often known as an intelligent animal and can communicate well with people. Aside from being a pet, the dog also became a friend of the owner. A new study could confirm why dogs are able to communicate by humans.

Dogs not only understand the meaning of some words like "here" and "go out." A new study shows that dogs can also follow the movement of a person's eye and capture the nonverbal signals.

"Understanding human communication in dogs with quite surprising. Understanding canine communication similar to understanding a baby," the researchers said as quoted by Epharmapedia.

The results of these studies indicate that dogs have an understanding of communication similar to a 6.5-month infant, when parents of infants are talking or when given direct eye contact.

"Our results suggest that dogs understand human communication in a manner similar to a 6.5-month baby," said József Topal, PhD,
a senior researcher in comparative behavior research team at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Budapest.

This makes dogs good at reading the intentions of communication people around him and responded to their nonverbal cues. The response of the communication can be, such as turning the head towards the object. The study is the first to use tracking software on a dog's eyes. Some 29 dogs were placed in front of the video recording.

The tests showed that, dogs are sensitive to cues as well as the baby. The second video is intended to test the communication signal is more complex to be understood by adults. Researchers compared the reaction of the dogs in comparison situations where dogs do not receive contact from a person's eye.

The results of these studies indicate that dogs see the screen again when they make eye contact of a person, as in the first instance in which a woman shows a strong effort to communicate. Dogs are also more likely to follow the movements of his head.

The researchers say that their results show similarities between preverbal outlook and behavior of pet dogs adults and infants in response to a signal communication with humans.

"By following the eye movements of dogs, it can instantly see how their minds are actually working," said Topal.

The results of the study have been published online in the journal Current Biology.
