Middle Island - On an island in Western Australia's largest, is a scene that seemed unreal. There are bright pink lake named Lake Hillier that attracts tourists and researchers.
Based on the latest speculation, the pink color is caused by algae. But in the latest study, the researchers confirmed that the presence of microbes extremophille contribute to the resulting color of the lake.
In the latest video, host SciShow, Hank Green, describes extremophille as one member of ecosystems on Earth's most bizarre because it can live in extreme conditions.
4 Bad Habits in the Morning that Affect Health
The organism can live in an environment that has a high salinity level, for example, Lake Hillier, Middle Island, Australia. It is quoted by the Daily Mail,
The lake was first discovered by SciSchow in 2013 and spurred the interest of researchers in eXtreme Microbiome Project.
Researchers collected sediment and water from various sides of the lake to make sure the algae, archaea, and bacteria that live in
them are drawn. With these samples, the team has used metagenom analysis in which DNA was extracted to identify species based on genetic infromasi.
By microbes in the samples collected in Lake Hillier, researchers found algae called Dunaliella salina which is suspected to be the culprit behind the water pink.
Algae can also be found in other pink colored lakes, namely Lake Retba in Senegal.

D. salina produce pigment compounds called carotenoids that help to absorb sunlight. The compound also gives a pink color in the algae.
The team also identified bacteria with aromatic Dechloromonas name, good to break down compounds such as benzene and toluene that are often found in chemical solvents.
From this information, researchers can trace the root causes of Lake hillier pink color. They found that the pink lake in the 1900s and was used as a tannery, which is widely used in the production of chemical solvents.
