Poor Sleep Quality Related to Brain Blood Vessel Hardening

A recent study conducted by researchers in the United States there is a link of bad quality sleep against hardening of the arteries of the brain in the elderly. It is called to contribute to the increased risk of stroke and cognitive disorders such as dementia.

Neuroscientists from the Sunnybrook Health Sciences Center Dr. Andrew Lim said the damage to the brain may also contribute to motor disorders of parents. As known to those who are elderly balance will be reduced and become vulnerable to falling.

"But there are still gaps of what we already know," said Dr. Lim as the leader of the study, adding that they still do not know for sure the pattern of cause and effect as quoted by LiveScience.

Dr. Lim is done by examining the history of sleep quality and autopsy results of 315 people who died at an average age of 90 years. They found that sleep is often disturbed 27 percent more likely to have hardening of the arteries dibandinkan those who do not.

Besides the elderly that bad sleep quality is also 31 percent more likely to have brain damage from lack of oxygen compared to those who sleep well.

However, Dr. Lim once again reminded that the studies that have been published in the journal Stroke is a new look at their relationship but can not determine the pattern of causation. Perhaps the poor quality of sleep was the cause or even as a result of hardening of the arteries of the brain.

If the findings of causation has been confirmed, Dr Lim said it is monitoring the quality of sleep may be a way to identify the risk of stroke in the elderly.
