Human Fetal Genetic Engineering Will Begins

London - Kathy Niakan, a developmental biologist has obtained permission from the authorities in the UK to carry out modifications human fetuses using gene conversion technology CRISPR / Cas9.

Quoted from Science Magazine on Wednesday, Niakan now works in the Francis Crick Institute in London. He applied for permission to use a technique intended to better understand the role of key genes during the first few days in the early development of the human fetus.

In the UK, the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA), the authority to license research using fetal, sperm and human egg cells. Approval granted permission to Niakan carried out in the HFEA license committee meeting on January 14.

Meeting notes said, "In balance, the use of CRISPR / Cas9 proposed is considered by the Committee to offer a better potential for success, and is the technical approach is justified in order to obtain research data on gene function of the embryos that are used."

The debate about the ethics of tinkering with the genes of the fetus has been going better for several years. Critics say that such a study carried out by Niakan can be the first step towards "design babies" or even eugenics (sorting-milahan humans based on a certain number of properties).

Nevertheless, today many scientists who support the decision of the HFEA.

Through a statement distributed by the Science Media Centre in London on February 1, 2016, Peter Braude-a professor emeritus of obstetrics and gynecology at King's College in London said, "I am pleased to hear that the HFEA has the common sense to approve this important project."

He continued, "The device pengutak manipulate genes allows a new understanding on the mechanisms that control the genetic basis of the allocation of cells in the early embryo."

"This mechanism is essential in ensuring the development and implantation of normal healthy because if there is something wrong can result in implant failure or miscarriage. I am interested in waiting for the results, "he said.
